Penumbra suggests a world where musical ideas are unfocussed and indistinct, suggested and only partially formed. The music evolves in short self-contained episodes in which a consolidated sense of pulse within the trio is eschewed and in which a celebration of idiom is avoided. Live processing extrapolates the intention of the instruments and further blurs the sense of any clear musical statement. Penumbra is the part shadow created in an area that receives light from one point source but not another.
